What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a type of acquired brain injury that occurs after a trauma that causes damage to the brain. The term head injury is sometimes used to describe this injury to the brain as well as any injury to head (scalp and skull) themselves.

Traumatic brain injury can be caused by falls, car accidents or a variety of other means and is common in children and young adults.

A traumatic brain injury can cause physical, cognitive, social and emotional impairments and can vary from mild to severe with each individual injury and child's presentation being different.

All severity levels of TBI have the potential to cause significant long lasting disability. Access to rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy is very important both during the early phase and following discharge from hospital. Ongoing physiotherapy may be required to manage ongoing symptoms.
