Spina Bifida is a birth defect that occurs during development of the embryo. It involves an opening in the vertebral column caused by the failure of the neural tube to close properly. This defect in the spine causes part of the spinal cord to be exposed and protrude. Neurological deficits can then occur below the level of the lesion including limited mobility.
