What is Guillain Barre Syndrome?

Guillian-Barre is a condition that affects the peripheral nervous system, occurring when the body’s immune system attacks part of the nervous system causing them to become inflamed and to stop working.

A child or young person will likely receive hospital treatment for this condition. Symptoms include progressive muscle weakness, coordination difficulties or unsteady walking and pain, tingling or numbness.

Most children who are diagnosed as having gullian-barre make a full recovery over time, however some children may have ongoing difficulties with their sensation or muscle strength.
